José J. Muñoz

PERFORMER. CHOREOGRAPHER.

About me

Hola!

Jose (he/him) grew up in the Republic of Panama, where he developed his passion for the arts and the diversity within them. Mom is a teacher and choreographer, which led to a very early exposure to dance and theatre. He started performing at age 14 in a production of “Don Bosco, el Musical”, a show that has only been produced in Spanish, his native language. Here, he discovered a world that combined form and story, extravaganza and poetry, reality and illusion. A world that, within its imaginary boundaries, heightened the human experience.

Besides performing, Jose has a passion for instruments and choreography. You can find him playing his guitar everywhere he goes, especially when going to the beach. He also plays piano and several percussive instruments. Choreography, however,  has a very special place in his heart, as it is something he shares with his mom and has made them grow closer in his recent adult years.

What’s new?

Jose is graduating this Spring with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Music Theatre from Florida State University. Him and his class are proud and excited to present their Senior Showcase in New York City this May 6th at the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre.

Shortly after that, he is going back to Panama to spend the first half of his summer directing and choreographing a Middle School production of Mary Poppins. Better get ready to Step in Time.

He is beyond excited to then journey to St. Louis, where he will join the ensemble of In the Heights at The Muny from August 9-16 in their 106th season. This is a show that means a lot for him and couldn’t be a better way of beginning his career while celebrating his identity.
